Assessing Your 2009 “Working Values”
Most Florida property owners are on pins and needles awaiting their 2009 property assessment notice to come in August. Due to market volatility, there is a possibility owners may receive significant tax relief if their assessments this year reflect the drop in property values which most have suffered.
An appeals process is available to all landowners who may feel they had an improper assessment. This process is generally perceived as cumbersome, time consuming and stacked against property owners. However, the appeals process exists for a good reason and is a check on government’s power to unfairly levy taxes. Legislator’s Proposal Backs Oil Drilling Off Coast
A top House Republican will unveil legislation Tuesday that could open the door to the first oil and gas drilling off Florida’s coast in decades.
Rep. Dean Cannon, the Orlando Republican who is slated to become House leader in 2010, will ask the House Policy Council on Tuesday to pass a bill that lifts Florida’s ban on oil drilling off state waters.
If lawmakers agree to pass the bill, it would be a complete reversal in state policy since the state imposed a virtual ban on drilling nearly 30 years ago.
